Life Simplified, In Case You Forgot

Life Simplified, In Case You Forgot Okay, so were all big kids.  We dont need anyone to hold our hand (well, most of the time).  Weve learned a lot so far in life.  And we have a lot of level 101 classes in our rearview mirror.  But sometimes, when youre fully capable of solving quadratic equations or coding for a new website, you can almost forget the simple basics.  Sometimes, its good to have a reminder of how to keep life simplified. Doing Life As A Big Kid I was reading recently that one in four American women over age 40 takes some kind of antidepressant.  Twenty-five percent.  They say its because the body loses its ability to produce seratonin, the natural chemical that helps maintain mood balance.  But I began to wonder.  What if its supposed to decline?  What if our body is genetically programmed to have a decline in seratonin because were supposed to be big kids now and be able to handle things better on our own? Im not saying that no one should be taking antidepressants.  What I am saying is that maybe if wed give ourselves a dose of life simplified  we would feel better about ourselves, our environment, and the world we live in.  In all our strutting about because were so great at (fill in the blank), maybe we need to stop, and look back at some basic reminders of how to do life in an easier and calmer and more effective way. Life Simplified There are a ton of self-help books, gurus, and websites out there.  And for as long as I can remember, theres been a flavor of the day in the latest and greatest ways to connect with your inner self, be a spiritual rockstar, or check out into some monastic lifestyle.  No matter what you think of any one of them, if youve read enough youve picked up on some common themes.  Some ideas that tend to be present in most or all of them. So, youre a big kid, right?  So youre pretty smart?  Then you have to recognize that if 30 carpenters are all using the same tool in just slightly different ways, maybe its more the tool and less the individual carpenter.  That being the case, it would make sense to get back to basics and embrace the power of that tool. Some Basics Here are a few verbal antidepressants, or call them pearls of wisdom if you wish.  Theyre from the book mentioned below: Have the courage to follow your heart and intuition Steve Jobs Everything responds to love Sometimes your only available transportation is a leap of faith Margaret Shepard Money cant buy happiness but it can buy a lot of antidepressants You can fail at what you dont want, so you might as well take a chance on doing what you love Jim Carrey Challenges are course corrections from the Universe So Little Time, So Many Sources As I said, theres a ton of material out there.  And you know as well as I do that theyre not going to add another hour to  the length of a day.  So a concise little package of reminders might be a great idea.  And I found one. Jennifer Noel Taylor has penned Love Incorporated, and its a delightful, easy-reading little volume full of reminders of many of the tools of the experts.   Again, you may not agree with them all, but theres plenty to ponder.  Think of it as a breakfast buffet of truths that will put perspective in your day.  Your daily dose of antidepressant in the form of inspiration and gratitude. Id call the book cozy.  Like the soft, warm pillow you snuggle up to.  Included with it is the comfortable little smile youll have after spending a few minutes in its pages. ABOUT  Jennifer Noel Taylor Jennifer is an energy healing practitioner, self-help motivator, and the CEO of Quantum-Touch, Inc. She has dedicated her life work to helping people discover the healing power of their love. Jennifer graduated from Cal Poly (San Luis Obispo, CA) with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Computer Science and a Minor in Philosophy. After graduation, she started her first job as a Software Engineer at a big company in San Diego. Like so many people, she felt incredibly trapped and depressed at a job that paid the bills but didn’t align with her true passion in life. She innately knew that she had a purpose and felt keenly aware that she was not following her true calling in life. “The meaning of life is to find your gift. The purpose of life is to give it awayâ€" Pablo Picasso image:  Asja BoroÅ¡

ELIZAS ADVENTURES IN STARTING A BUSINESS - Jane Jackson Career

ELIZAS ADVENTURES IN STARTING A BUSINESS - Jane Jackson Career On of the wonderful perks of my job as a Career Coach, is that I get to meet, and coach, talented professionals who are at a crossroads in their careers.   Many have experienced a redundancy or simply want a change and are reassessing what direction to take next.   Some want a similar job in a similar industry, some want to change industries or job functions and others, like Eliza Ludwig, feel the pull towards entrepreneurship.  Eliza Ludwig is a young mum who decided that, after a successful career at PepsiCo in finance, marketing, planning and analysis, the corporate life is no longer for her and has bravely thrown herself into setting up her own business.I was privileged to be Elizas career coach several months ago and, leveraging her existing financial skills and passion, she has launched Bread Budgeting Services.   Why Bread?   Because we cant live without it and money is sometimes referred to as bread or dough.   She cleverly works baking terms into her budgeting services and n ow that shes launched her offerings she has decided to share her story and blog about her entrepreneurial journey. Here is one of her early blog posts about how she got started and youll find more of Elizas posts at www.breadbudgetingservices.com/blog   Youll find her story inspiring and especially if you are thinking about plunging into entrepreneurship too.   Enjoy! My adventures in starting a business… Letting the dough proveSo, I’d mixed the yeast, water, salt, flour and oil. Or family, work, community and home. Very simple ingredients and I like simple. My mother made all our bread growing up, so I knew it would not be hard to transform it into something amazing.I wasn’t sure exactly how it was all going to pan out, but confident I was moving in the right direction, I completed my Diploma, held my children close, returned to Pepsi. And thought. And searched. And researched. To give myself a bit more space I took a year’s leave without pay. In that time, I was made redunda nt and assigned to a wonderful career and life coach, Jane Jackson, author of Navigating Career Crossroads. She suggested I read “Flee 9 â€" 5, Get 6-7 Figures and Do What you Love” by Ben Angel. He had some great ideas for finding products I could make into a business. So here I am, four years after deciding to change, waiting for the dough to prove.Proving can’t be rushed, but it is hard not to watch it too closely and to want to just shove it in the oven and get the process moving.First step was to register my business name. As I worked in a bakery in my teens and early twenties, I loved bread. It’s also slang for money. I love making bread â€" the slow considered process â€" and its parallels to building a business. Calling my business Bread was a no brainer I guess. Then came thinking about what products I could offer. This started with Ben Angel leading me to realise what goals I could help people achieve. I was so motivated that at this point, I wrote all the material f or the products, created spreadsheets and was ready to push go.Well, no. Not so simple. I had to tell people about me, and why I was the person for their job. I did not find this easy. Then I had to set up a website. I did not find this easy. Then I had to get insurance, legal documents, price lists, a marketing strategy, set a budget, write a business plan. Some of this I had done in my jobs, some of it I hadn’t even thought of. Wanna learn what I learnt along the way? Let’s do it.To be continued….To read more about Elizas journey visit her website, follow her on Facebook and on Twitter

Practical Tips For Holiday Job Hunting

Practical Tips For Holiday Job Hunting The holidays and the end of the year are already times that most of us consider more stressful than other seasons. But for some, the stress isnt from finding the perfect gift its from finding yourself unemployed. Whether it is the result of end-of-year layoffs or you have been searching for a job for some time, this time of year is challenging when there isnt a regular paycheck in the works. Dave Ramsey, the financial guy, just gave us 7 Practical Tips for Dealing With Job Loss at Christmas  and his suggestions are actually practical any time of year: cut back your spending change your outlook stick to your routine find seasonal work get creative be open with your family put the holidays in perspective Dont Give Up You can keep up the job hunt during the holidays and have a huge advantage because there are so many networking opportunities. Parties and gatherings are great ways to connect with people without making appointments. Temporary jobs can easily turn into full-time and if they dont you still have that paycheck and more work experience. Many a temp worker becomes manager later on so dont discount the lowly position. The thing I like about Dave Ramseys tips is that they make sense. When you are looking for a job, you need to be doing all those things and not pretend that everything is the same. It isnt the same and that is good because it gives you an excellent opportunity to make things better. Its like getting rid of the junk in your house so you can clean it and start over with the good things you decided to keep.
